Kana drill

Typefaces

Each card uses one of the ticked typefaces at random. Only fonts installed on this computer can be used; the rest are greyed out.

Add your own installed fonts by name, separated by commas.

Answering

Direction Look-alike choices When picking the kana from four, the wrong choices are its look-alikes and the kana you have mixed it up with, where there are any. Speed mode A correct reading is accepted as you type. No need to press Enter. Strict typing The first wrong letter counts as a miss straight away. Typing "ta" for て fails at the "a", with no backspacing out of it. After a miss Time limit per kana Running out of time counts as a miss. Peek on hover Rest the pointer on the kana for a moment to see its reading. Counts as a miss. Read aloud Speaks each kana once you have answered. Needs a Japanese voice installed on your system.

Which kana come up

Order Spaced repetition keeps a score for every kana. Clean answers raise it, misses lower it, and low scores come up more often. Scores show as bars in the charts.

Spaced repetition scoring

Top score (scores run from 0 to this) Points gained for a clean answer Points lost for a miss Starting score of a new kana How many times more often a kana at 0 comes up than one at the top score

Speed-aware scoring A clean but slow answer earns fewer points, using the two times below.

Full points when answered within (seconds) No points when it takes longer than (seconds)

In between, the points shrink evenly. Slow answers never lose points; only misses do.
